Film poster industry.
I’ve just finished reading an article “Making the Cut….” by Gavin Lucas, featuring in the Creative Review, March 2011. Basically what he says it not very optimistic. He describes the industry as “complex and frustrating to work in”. The huge amount of work that each of designers does is either overlooked or watered down by studio marketing department. Olly Moss, London based graphic designer, who used to work at film production company in LA, says that now he tends to work with film festivals or directly with a director or film company. In this way he gets a large degree of creative control and posters are often screenprinted on a nice stock in limited editions.
On the other hand, series of illustrated posters designed for “Black Swan” was picked up by dozens of bloggers and national newspapers as well. Which I think is a very good sign. It means that wider audience can appreciate more creative approach over highly retouched and very explicit (boring) posters.
I don’t think that I would ever consider working as a poster designer in the film industry. Although, I really like posters in general. For me, I think, it is the best way to analyse the message, content and play around with the visuals without limitations!
These pictures come from title sequence in “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” by Almodovar. I think they are great and each of them could be easily used as a poster for this light comedy. They represent the 70s pop aesthetics: bold, bright contrasting colours, the use of geometric shapes, surrealistic collages, mixes of photography and illustration. They are a part of the film that follows.
I find it very inspirational and also challenging. I like this film very much. I think this one is one of Almodovar’s most accessible films, totally set in the “feminine universe”, very human and sophisticated.
